Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch

Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch is a barrel strength, small batch bourbon released annually by Four Roses. Each release features a blend of select Four Roses recipes which is batched and bottled uncut.

Four Roses famously uses two different mash bills and five proprietary yeast strains, resulting in ten distinct bourbon recipes. These recipes are designated by a letter and number combination, such as OBSV or OESK, and each offers its own distinct flavor profile.

According to the distillery, while the ten recipes allows Four Roses to blend to consistency across the core lineup, it also allows them a lot of flexibility to be more creative with flavor profiles in special releases like this one.

The ‘V’ yeast in this release’s OBSV recipe is unique: during fermentation, the distillery discovered that the yeast had mutated, causing them to have to decide whether or not to dump all of the mash that used that yeast. They ultimately decided to risk using the mash, distilled it, and aged it. In the end, Jim Rutledge has frequently referred to this mutant V-mash bourbon as his all-time favorite whiskey, and one that can’t be recreated—the distillery did not preserve any of the mutated yeast.1flahute – StraightBourbon.com
