It shares its recipe with Elmer T. Lee, Blanton’s, and Rock Hill Farms. With the exception of international-market Blanton’s releases (80 proof), Hancock’s is the lowest-proof Mashbill #2 release from Buffalo Trace.
According to Sazerac, Hancock’s is named for Hancock Lee, an early settler who helped establish a settlement called Leestown along the Kentucky River in 1775. Leestown was known as a “shipping port for tobacco, hemp, corn and whiskey to the New Orleans market.” Leestown was located at the present-day site of Buffalo Trace Distillery, and is commemorated with a historical marker2explorekyhistory.ky.gov at the distillery entrance3Google Street View.
