WhistlePig The Boss Hog X “The Commandments”

WhistlePig The Boss Hog X “The Commandments” is a special release from WhistlePig as the 2023 edition of their The Boss Hog series. Each bottle comes from a single barrel, and strengths range from 105.3 to 107 proof.

The label was approved by the TTB on July 20, 2023.

The tenth release in the Boss Hog series, The Commandments is finished in two types of unique finishing barrels:

  • First finished in a barrel seasoned with a spirit distilled by WhistlePig from rye and whey, then infused with aromatic resins, commonly known as Frankincense and Myrrh.
  • After the resin barrels, the rye is finished in craft mead casks.

Boswellia and commiphora are trees that are native to Africa and India that have a fragrant gum resin, which is used to produce incense extracts. Frankincence is an extract from Boswellia trees, and myrrh is extracted from Commiphora trees.

With this release, WhistlePig also introduced their 10 Commandments, which they say will apply to this and all future Boss Hog releases. The first five were the company’s original “five promises” for Boss Hog expressions.

  1. Single Barrel
  2. Bottled at Proof
  3. Powerfully Complex
  4. Distinctly Unique From Anything We’ve Done Before
  5. Stupendous
  6. Fearlessly First Amongst All Whiskeys
  7. Inspired by the Unfamiliar
  8. Irreverently Inventive
  9. Made for Drinking
  10. Knows No Bounds

Reviews

8/10 • t8ke

Totally unusual rye that’s lovely to drink, wild to take part in and complex beyond expectation. Unreal experimentation that works here, and demands a pour if ever you see one.

As with last year’s Siren’s Song bottling, there’s nothing not to like here, but the experience has absolutely nothing in common with any rye you’ve had before.
