Spiritus Frumenti Whiskey

Spiritus Frumenti is a whiskey produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery as a part of its annual Prohibition Collection.

This expression is a 110-proof wheated bourbon, using the same mashbill as the W. L. Weller brand family.

“Spiritus Frumenti” is Latin for “Spirit of the Grain,” and was used by apothecaries to track whiskey in their ledgers in the 1800s. During Prohibition, it was a generic name for medicinal whiskey produced by many distilleries.

Announced in September 2023, the Prohibition Collection is a five-bottle set released annually by Buffalo Trace. During Prohibition, the distillery was known as the George T. Stagg Distillery, and it was one of six distilleries that was licensed by the U.S. government to produce medicinal whiskey. The expressions in the set honor some of the brands that were produced between 1920 and 1933.
