Basil Hayden Dark Rye is a blend of Kentucky rye whiskey, rye whiskey sourced from Beam’s Alberta Distillery, and California port. Rather than use a port barrel finish like those used by other brands, James B. Beam Distilling Co. chose to add port directly to the blend for this release. As a result, it tends to have a heavily port-forward flavor profile.
It was the first permanent line extension in the Basil Hayden brand lineup and was first released in 2017. It was released shortly after the first-ever Basil Hayden limited release, Basil Hayden Rye.
