WhistlePig The Boss Hog VIII “LapuLapu’s Pacific” is the eighth release in WhistlePig’s The Boss Hog series and hit shelves in 2021.
It is bottled at cask strength as a 17-year-old single barrel rye whiskey. Proof varies by barrel, which ranges from 104.8 – 106.5 proof. It’s double-finished, which means after 17 years of aging in its original cooperage, it’s transferred to 7-year-old, high-toast Philippine Rum casks, followed by an additional, shorter finish in 10-year-old Philippine Rum casks.
According to WhistlePig blender Meghan Ireland, “the older rum is darker and bolder, requiring less time for its barrels to impart notes in the whiskey. The end result is an amazingly unique and delicious whiskey.”
This edition of The Boss Hog serves as a sequel to The Boss Hog VII: Magellan’s Atlantic, which was released in 2020. The inspiration for LapuLapu’s Pacific comes from the island where Magellan met his fate during the battle of Mactan. According to the company, each edition of The Boss Hog “explores uncharted territory in the world of Rye to create a whiskey that is powerfully complex, distinctly unique from anything they’ve done before.”
