Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Rye is a limited release from Michter’s. It has had three nationwide releases.
The release takes Michter’s standard rye recipe, and finishes it in a second, custom toasted barrel that is assembled from oak that has air-dried for 24 months. According to the distillery, the barrel finishing was “designed to enhance the spice character in the rye while adding hints of dark toast and smoke.”
It is bottled at barrel strength, so proof varies from batch to batch. All of Michter’s whiskey goes into the barrel at 103 proof, which is a uniquely low proof point relative to the rest of the industry.
It is one of three toasted barrel-finished whiskeys available from Michter’s, joining their Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon and Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash. This is the only one bottled at barrel strength.
