Orphan Barrel Fable and Folly coming soon, featuring MGP whiskey blended with Rhetoric, Forged Oak and Barterhouse

Orphan Barrel Fable and Folly blend

Whiskey, blended
14 years

A new release from Diageo's Orphan Barrel line is on the way, according to a new TTB label approval.

Orphan Barrel Fable & Folly is a 14-year-old, 90 proof marriage of the remaining stocks of past Orphan Barrel bourbons with a "proprietary blend." The bourbons mentioned on the label were all distilled at Bernheim (now Heaven Hill) in Kentucky from the same 86% corn, 8% malted barley, 6% rye recipe:

  • Barterhouse: 20 years old at the time of release in 2014
  • Forged Oak: 15 years old at the time of release in 2015
  • Rhetoric: aged 20-25 years at the time of annual releases between 2014 and 2019

It's unknown at this time if these Orphan Barrel stocks have continued aging or if they were dumped and stored in stainless steel tanks.

The label also states that the whiskey was distilled in Kentucky (represented above) and Indiana, the well-known home of MGP Ingredients.

While it's not known exactly what MGP whiskey is used in this blend, we have some ideas. Diageo has been known to source rye from MGP for a few of their whiskies, notably ryes: George Dickel Rye and Bulleit Rye. Both of these products use a 95% rye, 5% malted barley recipe, and the Fable & Folly label mentions the "rich, creamy character of the orphaned bourbons with spicy notes of rye and pepper." Given that all of the Orphan Barrel bourbons in this release are aged 15 years or older, it's plausible that we're looking at a blend that includes 14-year-old MGP rye with 15+ year-old bourbon.

When our master blender discovered the last remaining stores of Orphan Barrel whiskies from years gone by, he thought it only fitting to share these whiskies with the world. He married the remaining stocks of Barterhouse, Forged Oak and various Rhetoric releases with a proprietary blend to create a masterpiece that pays homage to the original releases yet possesses a distinct profile all its own.

This 14-year-old whiskey is a unique balance of age and flavor accenting the rich, creamy character of the orphaned bourbons with spicy notes of rye and pepper. It begins with a burst of spice and delicately warms to creamy richness with sweet notes of syrup and fruit.

We may see this release hit shelves before the year is over – the latest Orphan Barrel release, Copper Tongue, was approved by the TTB in May and was widely available by July.

We'll be keeping an eye out for official release details and pricing in the coming months.
